GENTIAN TRAILS - SCHOLARSHIP
We happily started in September-2007 helping a child from a far area near Zuleta valley in the northern region of Ecuador, her name is Monica Tito and she is part of a program of education from the Zuleta farm - Galo Plaza Foundation.
The Plaza Family owns the Hacienda Zuleta where we host our clients as part of our packages. Knowing about their social projects, we have offered to be involved in this educational program, sponsoring Monica with an scholarship in her elementary school.
Monica wrote us a beautiful letter that we would like to share with you as part of this wonderful experience:
“Dear Donors:
First of all I want to say hello to you with respect and love. I leave in a community far from the city, surrounded by mountains and forests. We are 5 brothers and sisters: Azucena, Monica (me), David, Javier and Mateo.
My mom embroiders and my dad works in construction and agriculture. We have a cow, sheep, pig, dog, cat, guinea pigs(cuy), chickens, and rabbits.
I am in 8th grade of school, I have good teachers. I like all subjects, specially Spanish language. My favorite food is rice with potatoes. I am 12 years old and my birthday is August 30th – 1997.
Thank you for helping me studying !

Monica ”
When we met Monica we were touched, but at the same time extremely happy to be able to help her growing.

As part of our commitment with the society and following our philosophy of life, we have started in December-2006 a project to help the homeless Indians in the area of Otavalo, therefore Gentian Trails has taken the decision to share a percentage of our profit and make a monthly donation to Casa Atuntaqui.
There is a massive amount of money assigned to help nature, sustainable tourism etc. but a very small group or none in the tourism business help humans, many tourist visit the area of Otavalo because of it’s famous market and beautiful landscapes, but there is another face, and it is, the sick homeless Indians that have been abandoned and need our help.
By coincidence we were informed of this place that we have named ‘’Casa Atuntaqui’’ , by a famous Medical Doctor who is helping this people and is related with our company, he introduced us to Sister Teresa Rivera an Ecuadorian missionary that decided to help this unfortunate people.
Sister Teresa spend many years in the slums of Rio the Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brasil helping the leprous, and decided to start the foundation in her own house in Atuntaqui-Ecuador since year 2003.
It has been very tough for her, as she hardly gets some founds from the charity of the neighbors and people who know about the place, therefore since we met her and knew that we could be of a good help, we started visiting periodically Casa Atuntaqui and work with Teresa on part of their needs.
Some of our clients visit the house and make donations, some of our clients send donations, and indirectly when you come to Ecuador with us, you are also part of these donations.
Thank you for helping Casa Atuntaqui!
